For the last few years the Mission has had an average 270-plus parents on our Parenting Through Separation (PTS) programme, which is running now in Dunedin, writes Methodist Mission southern director Laura Black.

PTS is a free parenting course for families going through a breakup. It is two, two-hour sessions and can be done in person or online in a virtual class.

Topics include: how children experience separations, how adults experience a breakup and how that can flow on to the children, how conflict can affect the children, and what you can do to help them.

There’s information on what the law requires, options for care arrangements, how to co-parent with your now ex-partner, and where to go when it’s not working out.

Last year one of the parents said “it is a great service (please keep it going) with valuable information and holding it over two evenings was a good amount of time to cover everything. On a personal note, thought the facilitator was great and it was an easy and welcoming environment. Thank you for the ease and quickness of being able to attend a course.”

Another said, “it is a safe space for people to open up and discuss things that I haven’t felt able to with family and friends. With the information from the course I have felt more empowered since attending. The course is very well done and so convenient to be able to do online.”

Parents go through separate courses so that everyone can speak freely, but grandparents and other whanau are welcome to attend too.
