New lights for Chinese exhibits

Otago Museum staff have been installing more efficient electric lamps in the museum's special exhibitions gallery as preparations continue to stage a new exhibition from China.

Developed by the Shanghai Museum, the free-entry show is titled ''China's Cultural Minorities: Silk to Silver'', and opens on July 6. New LED lamps had been tested for use in exhibition cases, with ''excellent results'' and it was planned to install 60 for use for this exhibition and future shows, organisers said in a recent report.

The lamps were ''significantly more energy-efficient'' and had a lifespan 10 times longer than the existing halogen lamps.

That meant ''a great saving in energy and maintenance costs over time'', museum officials said.
