A driver stopped by police at Bannockburn on Saturday night allegedly had a breath-alcohol level more than three times above the legal limit and his licence was suspended as a result.
The 65-year-old Central Otago man, who allegedly had a level of 1322mcg, will appear in the Alexandra District Court on June 26, charged with drink-driving, Sergeant Derek Ealson, of Alexandra, said.
''It was disappointing to see such a high reading and to see that person had taken it upon himself to drive,'' Sgt Ealson said.
Later that evening, a 22-year-old Central Otago man, who tried to ''evade police'', was stopped at Cromwell and breath-tested, allegedly recording a breath-alcohol level of 517mcg. He will also appear in the Alexandra court on June 26 on a drink-driving charge.
''Two drink-driving arrests in one weekend is extremely disappointing,'' Sgt Ealson said.
''I'm disappointed that people either think the practice is acceptable, or that they won't be caught. By choosing to drive, they risk their licence status, their employment and also put other road users at risk.''
• An incident at a party in Alexandra on Saturday night resulted in a 23-year-old Alexandra man being arrested. He will appear in the Alexandra court on June 26 on a charge of offensive behaviour likely to cause violence to start. Sgt Ealson said police received several complaints about the man's behaviour from other party-goers.
