Contractors dig up part of the road at the intersection of Anzac Ave and Castle St, Dunedin, as they make permanent changes to the road following the death of a cyclist there in 2011.

The change is part of a suite of short-term measures to improve cycle and pedestrian safety on the one-way sections of State Highway 1 through Dunedin following the 2011 death and another last year.

The $150,000 alteration, which makes permanent the temporary changes that have been in place for several months, will be completed in about three weeks.

It is being paid for by the New Zealand Transport Agency and is being done after consultation with the Dunedin City Council, cycling advocacy group Spokes and affected users.

The council has indicated it is still concerned about safety at the intersection and its medium-term preference is for Anzac Ave to be made a cul-de-sac.
