Promising New Zealand junior and Otago cyclist Alysha Keith is hoping another stint in the United States will help her add an extra yard of pace.

The 19-year-old followed a now well-beaten path of New Zealand cyclists and spent some time racing in and around Kutztown, Pennsylvania last year.

She returned earlier this week and plans to stay for 10 weeks.

''It is just to get some racing in,'' she said.

''That's the main goal. I went over there last year for the build-up for junior worlds and I enjoyed the racing, so I'm going back for some more.''

Keith was part of the New Zealand women's pursuit team that won silver at the junior world championships in Invercargill last year.

The trip is also a chance to escape the Dunedin winter and train in a different environment. And you cannot beat regular racing to hone your competitive edge.

She is preparing for the Oceania Championships, which are planned for Invercargill later in the year, although there is talk the event might be shifted to later in the summer.

Keith picked up the sport while at Taieri College and has been riding competitively for four years.

She specialises in the teams and individual pursuit - an event made popular in this part of the world by the success of world champion Alison Shanks.

Shanks has also done her time in Kutztown. The New Zealand women's pursuit team used to head there to avoid winter and get in plenty of racing.
