Organising committee secretary Linda Armstrong said that in its heyday, the event attracted up to 500 entrants but fields in recent years had been smaller, with other events around Central Otago luring away competitors.
The organisers were planning to make a ‘‘big deal'' of next year's event, the 20th Ghost to Ghost, and competitors from previous years would be invited to return.
The money raised goes towards the St Bathans and Becks communities for environmental projects and there are spin-offs for other organisations which provide the food and help run the event.
