Natalie Lin (24), Christchurch born and Auckland based, says she is ''really excited and humbled and honoured'' to be the first New Zealander to reach the semifinals of the Michael Hill International Violin Competition in eight years.

Ms Lin arrived in Queenstown on Monday and is practising movements by Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and other composers while staying with a host family at Closeburn Station.

She and 17 international semifinalists enjoyed a warm welcome in a cold climate this week before the increasingly prestigious biennial competition begins on Saturday.

Ticketed performances of round one and two and informative talks are scheduled for the public in the resort from tomorrow until Monday, then the 13-year-old competition founded by Arrowtown entrepreneur Sir Michael Hill moves to Auckland for round three and the final on June 5 to 8.

Ms Lin and her contemporaries will vie for a first prize package which includes $40,000, a tour of New Zealand and a recording on the Atoll label.
