Five people were arrested after a fracas at the Globe nightclub early on Saturday morning when Oamaru police had to call out extra staff, Sergeant Tony Woodbridge said yesterday.
The incident started about 12.30am, with two police officers called to the nightclub to evict a patron.
Friends and family members of the patron became involved, and police had to call on three extra staff to control the situation.
They were helped by three security staff at the nightclub and a patron, assistance which Sgt Tony Woodbridge praised yesterday.
When police arrived the patron became violent, Sgt Woodbridge said.
As they were attempting to restrain him four other people became involved and tried to free the patron.
Police at the nightclub called for urgent extra assistance to help contain the situation.
As a result, five people have been arrested - two 26-year-old males, a 27-year-old male, a 21-year-old female and a 27-year-old female.
They have been charged with various offences including assault, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, threatening language and improper use of a telephone.
Sgt Woodbridge said the incident tied up police for several hours.
