Clusters of shoes hanging from power lines in Castle St are not considered a hazard. About 20 pairs of shoes have appeared on lines in the student area recently.

A Delta spokesman said they would not affect power supply to the area. More concerning was vegetation growing close to lines, he said.

Castle St residents spoken to by the Otago Daily Times this week said shoes were thrown over power lines as an adornment, in a similar fashion to the Cardrona bra fence.

The act of throwing laced-together shoes over power lines was termed ''shoefiti'' in the United States, where it apparently originated. Shoes hanging from lines outside houses sometimes served to advertise that illegal drugs were sold inside.
