Death at Deborah Bay not suspicious: police

The coroner will investigate the death of a man in Deborah Bay near Dunedin on Tuesday night.

The man, who was believed to have owned a boat moored at the marina, was found in the water.

The death was not believed to have been suspicious and had been referred to the coroner, a police spokeswoman said.

Moorings Otago owner Kevin Waters believed he was probably one of the last people to see the man alive.

Mr Waters and another man had been replacing pilings that had been damaged by weather at the Deborah Bay marina earlier in the week.

They finished work about 2.30pm and emergency services were called about 5.20pm.

The man who was later found dead was friendly and had helped them with ropes.

Mr Waters said he had met the man two or three times but did not know him well.

Te Runanga o Otakou placed a rahui covering Otago Harbour from Steamer Basin to Taiaroa Head until 5am today.
