Night closures to Milford

Night-time closures and increased monitoring on the Milford road will continue until weather conditions allow the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) to finish an inspection of a rockfall area.

Bad weather this week prevented geotechnical experts from completing the inspection of the area, above the western entrance of the Homer Tunnel, which has been closely monitored since late last year due to concerns about its stability.

The night-time closures would be in place between the eastern end of the Homer tunnel and Murrells Creek from 5.30pm until 7.30am.

NZTA Southland area manager Peter Robinson said the weather was expected to be good enough towards the middle of next week to complete the inspection. Various measures were in place to ensure road user safety, including on-site staff at the tunnel using high-powered cameras and traffic signals to manage traffic, if rock at the site appeared to be failing. The latest information about night time closures is available at www.highwayinfo.govt.nz or by phoning 0800-444-449.
