A Dunedin resident says the Dunedin City Council has spent nearly two years ignoring a crack in the surface of Challis St.

Vauxhall resident Daniel Knowles said he first raised concerns with the council about the crack in November 2020.

The street was damaged by a heavy digger brought in to deal with the aftermath of a fatal fire at the bottom of the street in February of that year.

Mr Knowles raised the issue again in February and a contractor was sent out to inspect the slump about three weeks ago.

The contractor marked it with white spray paint and left, Mr Knowles said.

He estimated the metal drain cover on the road where the crack was had fallen about 9cm since it was first brought to the council’s attention and when cars travelled over it, drivers could feel a thump.

The hole had become something of a talking point for Mr Knowles and his neighbours.

He said the metal cover was clearly connected to a pipe and was concerned it could be connected to the sewage or water system.

The crack in the road was symptomatic of neglect and the council needed to focus on the basics, Mr Knowles said.

He believed the hole was a case-in-point as it had grown since it had been sprayed three weeks ago.

Council transport delivery manager Ben Hogan said the road would be repaired in July.

"We apologise to Mr Knowles," Mr Hogan said.

Mr Knowles’ initial inquiry was received but the staff member who was dealing with it left the council shortly afterwards and it was unclear what action was taken.

A contractor was sent to assess the situation following Mr Knowles raising the issue again earlier this year, Mr Hogan confirmed.
