Emergency services were called to help rescue a trapped man after a collision between an SUV and a truck in central Dunedin.

A police spokeswoman said a four-tonne truck crashed into a bank and collided with a car about 4.30pm.

One person was initially trapped and was being treated by St John, but there was no information on their status, the spokeswoman said.

A person in the SUV said they were driving up the hill when they saw the truck swerving down the road with no driver at the wheel and a pair of legs sticking out the open passenger door.

The experience was "really scary," they said.

Two fire appliances attended along with a St John rapid response vehicle and an ambulance.

Firefighters could be seen cutting the window off the truck to extricate the trapped person and take them by stretcher into a waiting ambulance.

The truck was carrying roading equipment and a man in hi-visibility safety gear could be seen being comforted soon after the crash.

Members of a family with a child were in the SUV and appeared to escape without significant injuries.
