Madcap film brings 500K into regional economy

More than $500,000 was spent in the Queenstown-Lakes district for the making of new New Zealand film Nude Tuesday.

Most of the money went to businesses in Makarora, a small settlement at the top of Lake Wanaka.

Nude Tuesday was written by and stars New Zealander Jackie van Beek.

A made-up gibberish language is used in the comedy which is set on a fictional island called Zobftan, somewhere in the wild blue yonder of the Pacific.

A comedian from the country where it is shown does the film’s subtitles.

Zobftan was actually Makarora and beyond for the cast and crew for more than a month.

During the filming of Nude Tuesday, in September-October 2020, more than $40,000 was spent on flights, $170,000 on accommodation and $90,000 to feed crew in Queenstown, Wanaka and Makarora.

For four-and-a-half weeks, Makarora’s Wonderland Holiday Park was used as the film set and accommodation for staff.

Park manager Reon Morland said the holiday park was fully booked by the crew for the duration of filming.

"It really was incredible to see the behind the scenes of the filming. The crew and actors lived on site for a few weeks ... They were just like a big family," Mr Morland said.

The holiday park can accommodate more than 120.

He said the community rallied together and supported the production, with some even working as extras.

The film received funding from the New Zealand Film Commission, through the Screen Production Grant, Production Fund and the Screen Production Recovery Fund.

It is a New Zealand-Australia co-production and provided jobs to more than 140 cast and crew, and 50 extras.

Commission acting chief executive Mladen Ivancic said the production was an example of supporting local economies.

"There were dozens of people across the service industries in Auckland and Makarora who helped bring it [the film] to the big screen. The production is a great example of the benefits the sector brings to local economies," Mr Ivancic said.

Nude Tuesday was released in theatres on Thursday.
