Mountain biking: Greene conquers rivals, conditions

Dunedin mountain biker Erin Greene had to wait four years to defend her 24-hour endurance title.

But when it comes to outlasting her opponents she has the wood on her competitors.

The 30-year-old won the 24hr N-Duro event in Rotorua on the weekend. She had to ride through some pretty challenging weather conditions and defended the title she won when the race was last staged in 2009.

Greene managed 16 laps of the 17km course and stayed ahead of the opposition despite stopping for the odd quick refuel and to put on some dry clothes.

''It rained heaps and it got pretty wet and cold,'' Greene said.

''I had a girl pushing me pretty hard most of the race so that kept me going.''

The victory means Greene has qualified for the world championships in Canberra in October. She finished fifth at the world championships in 2010 and is looking forward to having another shot at the title.

''I'll be training all through winter.''

Winning the mental battle is a big part of endurance racing. The temptation to just stop niggles away at Greene as much as her competitors but ''I can always go and go'', she said.

''A lot of it comes down to coping with the pain and finding a way to get through it. You have to find things to keep you going.

''I could have pulled out many times in the weekend, especially in the wet. The track was so muddy and it made it really slow and hard work.''
