''A number of complaints'' have been received by the Queenstown police about cyclists riding three or four abreast on roads in and around the resort.
Senior Constable Chris Blackford said police had received complaints and he took the opportunity to remind all road users to obey the road rules.
Queenstown is hosting the BikeNZ club road championship this weekend and the organisation's chief executive, Kieran Turner said motorists would no doubt be more aware of cyclists on the roads.
Racers were permitted to ride in bunches only when accompanied by official race vehicles, equipped with flashing lights, during the race, he said.
It would be absolutely clear to motorists when cyclists were racing and he said cyclists were constantly reminded to ride safely when not racing.
Tomorrow, cyclists in the Tour of New Zealand are scheduled to cycle from Queenstown to Arrow Junction then on to Wanaka.
Mr Turner said he was unaware what provisions the Tour of New Zealand had, as it was unrelated to BikeNZ.
He emphasised the club road championships had management plans approved by the Queenstown Lakes District Council.
