Former Brazilian jiujitsu world champion Rafael Gordinho Lima instructs a junior class at Gracie Oceania's gym in Dunedin yesterday.

Gordinho Lima was in the city to take a couple of seminars yesterday and today, and check out how the Dunedin branch of Gracie Oceania is performing.

The 37-year-old is a former Brazilian jiujitsu world champion, and has travelled extensively around the world with the sport.

He was born in Rio de Janeiro and as a youngster became friends with the Gracie family, said to be the founding family of jiujitsu.

Gordinho Lima went on to be the Brazilian jiujitsu national champion for four years until 1997. Since then he has been teaching the sport in all corners of the world and helping mentor Gracie Oceania instructors.

This was his first trip to New Zealand.
