Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium is entered in a national construction award contest in a bid to be named New Zealand's best industrial building.

Hawkins Construction project director Andrew Holmes said he entered the stadium in the industrial award category of the New Zealand Commercial Project Awards, for Hawkins' part in the building project.

''It's an outstanding project, and the city should be proud of it, and certainly Hawkins are proud of our efforts.''

Hawkins Construction was the main building contractor, he said.

Dunedin Venues Management Ltd chief executive Darren Burden said the judges inspected the stadium in March last year.

''They really liked what they saw and it's pleasing to see that the stadium has been recognised.''

Registered Master Builders' Federation marketing manager Tracey Bree said the judging was complete and the federation was preparing for the ''big do'' in Auckland on May 11, when winners would be announced. Forty-two commercial projects, including Auckland's Britomart, Pitches Store in Ophir and the Monteiths Brewing Company in Greymouth, had been entered.

The other award categories were restoration, retail, commercial and civic, tourism and leisure, education, health and residential projects. There were four value-based categories ranging from projects below $2 million to those costing more than $15 million.

The inaugural awards evolved from the House of the Year competition and the Commercial Project Awards. Entries were welcomed from all commercial contractors, not just registered master builders.

Awards spokesman Greg Pritchard said the volume and quality of entries showed the commercial construction sector was in ''good shape''.
