About 40 motorsport enthusiasts are expected to take part in the 50th running of the historic Ngapara Hill Climb, near Oamaru, on Sunday.
The event, which takes place on a 1.4km stretch of Ngapara-Georgetown Rd (formerly Coal Pit Rd), has been run intermittently since it began in the 1950s, and organiser Peter Fridd said Sunday's event was thought to be the 50th time the hillclimb had taken place.
''We think it's the 50th year ... it was gravel originally, so it has got a bit of history,'' Mr Fridd said.
The event now consisted of two separate sections, for modern and vintage cars.
He said a big number of spectators and between 40 and 50 competitors were expected on the day.
Drivers from Southland and Christchurch had already entered for the event, Mr Fridd said.
''One entry we have got is Alan Wills [from Oamaru], who is going to bring out his Group B Audi Quattro for some demonstration runs. It's quite a famous old car, driven by Stig Blomqvist and one or two of those famous drivers.''
