The owner of an elderly three-legged Jack Russell has been left with a $640 vet bill after, he says, his dog was attacked by two husky dogs whose owner did not intervene.

The incident allegedly occurred last Tuesday at 6.30pm when Frankton man Brad Markey was taking dog Trip on one of their twice-daily walks along Frankton Beach. Trip was left with multiple puncture wounds, requiring a drain.

Mr Markey alleged the husky dogs' owner failed to intervene, then accused Mr Markey of being in the wrong for not having Trip on a lead.

''Trip ran over to say hello and sort of stopped about a metre away from them and one of them just lunged and took the owner with him,'' Mr Markey said.

He said both dogs then attacked Trip, holding him off the ground in their mouths.

While the huskies had been on a lead, Mr Markey said, the owner was ''obviously not in control''.

''Things got a little bit heated between us ... but he just bundled his dogs into the car and took off.''

Mr Markey said he had no ill-will towards the dogs and did not want them to be destroyed, as ''they obviously haven't been shown how to act around other dogs'', but warned ''if they are in a public place [attacking] then that's a bigger concern''.

He has reported the incident to Lakes Environmental, which handles dog registrations, but has no record of the dogs or owner, and he was considering reporting the incident to police.

Mr Markey rescued Trip from the pound in Australia and brought the Jack Russell to New Zealand when he and his wife relocated here.

Trip, who lost one back leg after being hit by a car before he was adopted, has been with Mr Markey for six years and is between 11 and 13 years old.

''He's basically our baby replacement,'' Mr Markey said.

Mr Markey hopes the huskies' owner might help with his vet bill and urged him to contact Lakes Environmental or himself through the Otago Daily Times.
