Those with an interest in travel need not jump on a plane thanks to Queenstown's answer for armchair travellers - the Wakatipu Travel Club.

The club meets every fourth Monday of the month, with meetings often drawing up to 30 people to live vicariously through others' experiences.

Club president June Hamilton said meetings were often lively, always interesting and came with afternoon tea to top it off.

The broad topic of travel attracted a range of speakers only too willing to share their travel stories and life experiences, which covered everywhere from Vietnam and Africa to the Nevis Bluff.

At the most recent travel club meeting, Queenstown travel consultant Victoria Keating spoke of growing up in an area known as the Gemfields in Australia.

The Gemfields consists of four small towns called Sapphire, Anakie, Rubyvale and The Willows and Ms Keating said it was a little girl's dream to grow up finding precious stones in your own driveway.

With a history spanning more than 20-years, the travel club has no plans to jet off and Ms Hamilton said new members were always welcome.

The club meets at the St John's Rooms in Frankton at 2pm and membership is $10 a year to join and $5 a meeting to cover afternoon tea.

The Queenstown Times is running a weekly series profiling clubs in the Wakatipu. It you would like your club to feature, email: news@queenstowntimes.co.nz
