Strong community feedback welcomed by mayor

West Otago can soon look forward to a flurry of community projects.

Clutha District Council’s Our Place West Otago community plan consultation concluded on Friday, and officials have begun to collate an unusually large number of responses.

The consultation combined community outreach with traditional submissions, and gathered nearly 1000 "feedback items", and 91 survey submissions. Feedback items include comments and suggestions received during outreach sessions at community hubs across the district.

Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan said he had been impressed by the degree of engagement from West Otago residents.

"This has been a great start to the process, dealing with positive people and a community, in West Otago, that already knows how to take the initiative in fixing its own problems and embracing progress.

"There were certainly some dominant themes that came up, around subdivision development and walking trails in particular, and a wide range of other issues and potential projects close to the community’s heart."

The council had been "inundated" with responses, and would now work to collate and refine those into areas of interest and projects to carry forward.

The consultation is the latest phase of a district-wide community planning process begun in Balclutha in 2017, and will continue in Clinton and Clutha Valley during the next 12 months.

Clutha’s coastal communities of Toko Mouth and Taieri Mouth will complete coverage of the district during the following financial year.
