The Southern Geared yearling sale is the brainchild of Brent McIntyre, who part-owns Macca Lodge near Gore, with a little help from noted Australian yearling preparer Ross Pike, who ran a similar sale called Yearlings In Harness.
''We got him over to teach us how to foal-lead our horses and learn to break in his way,'' McIntyre said.
''It was an idea he was using over there for the last year or so.''
The yearlings for sale have been geared up and running - although not at full speed - and have been filmed and put on Macca Lodge's website. Potential buyers can also inspect the yearlings at their respective properties.
''The biggest asset about it is they're broken in, you know they're clean-gaited, good attitude and all the rest of what goes with a nice horse,'' McIntyre said.
A large majority of the yearlings for sale are from Macca Lodge, although there has been buy-in from the likes of Dave Kennedy (of the Beaudiene breed), Tuakepa Lodge and Mark O'Connor.
Buyers need to register their interest for the horse with the respective sellers, and the price for each yearling will be revealed from Monday.
''The difference is they've got a set price on them, so they can't be worth more, they can only be worth less. and we'll still take an offer,'' McIntyre.
''It's over a month, so in a way, it's a reverse auction.
McIntyre's draft in particular is there for sale.
''If you like the horse, it's yours on the day, or any time over that month. but if you like the horse, but you think it's too much, you can put an offer in. If the horse is still there in a month, he's yours.
