The Catlins Great Escape Coastal Walk followed the coastline from Fortrose to Waipapa Point, finishing with a tour of the Waipapa Point Lighthouse.
Tourism Catlins projects co-ordinator Kim Dodds said it was the first time the four-hour walk had been held, thanks to Fortrose landowners.
The walk was a major success, attracting more than 80 participants, with some coming from as far afield as Wellington, she said.
''The weather was perfect and the view to Stewart Island was magnificent.''
Catlins Coast Inc encouraged walkers to take a bag with them to pick up any rubbish they might find along the way, Mrs Dodds said. Organisers wanted to thank the Tokanui Search and Rescue for supporting the event and keeping walkers safe.
The Department of Conservation and Maritime New Zealand opened the Waipapa Lighthouse, allowing participants to enjoy a tour of the lighthouse at the end of the walk.
Due to the event's success, Catlins Coast Inc has decided to co-ordinate another walk in April - from Purakaunui Bay to Papatowai.
More details would be released soon, Mrs Dodds said.
