Covid-19 has not killed love.

Restaurants around Dunedin had many bookings for tables for two last night for Valentine’s Day.

The Jitsu owner George Magnuson said although the restaurant was almost completely booked he did not expect it to be much busier than a usual night.

There was a low table turnover on Valentine’s Day because customers took their time to "sip their wine and look into each other’s eyes".

The evening would be under control with the usual number of staff.

With people working from home there were not many customers at lunch time and Valentine’s Day had not changed that.

Speight’s Ale House co-owner Kelvin Stevens said there were a lot of tables booked for two.

That would lead to a small increase in how busy waiting staff were, but the restaurant was happy to accommodate that to ensure everybody had a great night.

Bacchus Wine Bar and Restaurant owner Steven Hannagan said it was great people were getting out and enjoying the evening.

Between Valentine’s Day falling on a Monday and the Red setting, many restaurants would not be open.

He was pleased to see people enjoying themselves on the special day.

"You’ve got to make the most of now."
