As Ryan Cameron was gearing up on Wednesday for one of the biggest days on his calendar, the Wanaka Rodeo, his wife entered the early stages of labour.

However, ''not much was happening'' and as their child was not due until the following day, Mr Cameron, who is president of the Wanaka Rodeo Club, headed to the annual rodeo as planned.

By early afternoon their midwife informed wife Kylie she should head to the Charlotte Jean Maternity Hospital in Alexandra, so she called her husband.

He missed the final three events of the rodeo, the team roping, steer wrestling and the bull ride, so he could be at his wife's side.

At 6.40pm on Wednesday, their daughter Macy was born, weighing in at 3.94kg.

The Luggate couple already have two children - Cade (6) and Jordy (2) who they said were quite excited to have a little sister.
