A 20-year-old Christchurch man arrested for running naked on the Wingatui racecourse during last month's Melbourne Cup event is defending a charge in relation to the incident.
Samuel Anthony Ermerins, a University of Otago student, pleaded not guilty to one charge of criminal nuisance when he appeared in the Christchurch District Court this week.
The charge carried a maximum penalty of one year in jail.
Ermerins was remanded at large to appear in the Dunedin District Court for a status hearing in February.
On November 6, a streaker narrowly missed being trampled by horses when running on the track in front of them during the main race at Wingatui.
He was chased by security and police officers as soon as the race ended, and was escorted from the racecourse.
