Dunstan Arm and Oamaru got their seasons off to strong starts at the weekend.

The two clubs accounted for nearly all titles won by Otago clubs at the Otago rowing championships on Lake Ruataniwha.

Dunstan Arm claimed 17 first places across the regatta.

While its age-grade girls’ crews did typically well, there was increased success in its men’s and open crews.

Harry Wilkinson, Jack Pearson, Angus Kenny and Aaron Maxwell, a quartet new to the club, were among those to help Dunstan to success in the men’s grades.

Former Invercargill rower Kristen Froude also shone for the club in the open women’s grade.

Oamaru also had a good weekend, coming away with six titles.

It showed its depth of talent, predominantly winning in the four and eight crews.

North End won several titles in the masters grades, while Otago Boys’ High School, Wanaka and the Otago Rowing Club all claimed titles as well.

The championships were well attended by rowers from around the South Island, Canterbury clubs in particular proving strong.

The next major regatta on the South Island schedule is the Canterbury championships on January 15.
