Kainga Ora projects set to be completed in mid-2022

A series of Kainga Ora housing projects in the Dunedin area are scheduled to be completed by the middle of next year.

However, not all planned developments are proceeding with pace.

Construction has started in Queen St, Forfar St and Church St, all in Mosgiel, and those projects are due to be completed in mid-2022.

Building is due to start in Murray St and Oban St, Mosgiel, early next year.

Those projects will collectively deliver 17 homes, or 21 bedrooms.

A development in Stirling Cres in Mosgiel is on hold, pending changes to the Dunedin City Council district plan.

Three one-bedroom units had been planned for Stirling Cres, but it is expected more homes could be built at the site when development rule changes come in.

In Dunedin, construction of five one-bedroom units has started in Helensburgh St, Wakari, and is scheduled for completion in mid-2022.

A development in Mayfield Ave, Wakari, is in the planning phase.

Kainga Ora Otago and Southland regional director Kerrie Young said the government agency was constantly looking at opportunities to increase the number of warm, dry homes for people in need.

There were 360 people on the waiting list for public housing in Dunedin, she said.

That amounted to 38% of the waiting list in the broad Otago, Southland and South Canterbury region.

Kainga Ora owned 2582 homes in that area.

"Around 1420 of these are in Dunedin and Mosgiel," Ms Young said.

"In the past two financial years, Kainga Ora has purchased five properties in Dunedin, comprising 29 homes.

"The current strategy for the area is increasing housing stock through site redevelopment, property acquisition and building of new homes."

The main focus was on building new units.

Kainga Ora was also upgrading its stock, she said.

In late October, the agency bought nine homes in City Rd, Roslyn, for transitional housing.

"These homes will provide people and families in urgent need of housing with a warm, dry, safe place to live, while they receive wraparound support services and are helped to find a more permanent place to live," Ms Young said.

In July, an agreement was signed with the Dunedin City Council for Kainga Ora to explore the potential for housing at the bus depot site in Princes St.

Kainga Ora was still undertaking due diligence on this site, Ms Young said.

The Government also has an infrastructure acceleration fund designed to boost housing development.

The Dunedin City Council made no applications to the fund.
