Errant Queenstown Library book borrowers will be able to wipe $5 in fines for a can of food for charity for a week from Monday.
Queenstown Library manager Robyn Robertson said the initiative proved extremely popular last year, with more than 300 cans being collected in Queenstown alone, and she expected a similar response this year.
"It's the libraries' good deed for Christmas.
"People get a gift from us in the form of waived fines and local charities benefit as well.
"It's a win-win situation."
The terms of the amnesty stipulated only overdue fines for items which had been returned were eligible for the waiver and any cans of food presented must be within their use by date and without rust or dents.
Queenstown and Arrowtown libraries have chosen Happiness House as the beneficiary of the cans, while the Upper Clutha Libraries will give their cans to Wanaka Community Networks.
- The amnesty runs from Monday to Saturday.
