Apple slims down to compete

Apple has launched a new range of its trademark products, with an emphasis on smaller and thinner as it competes with Amazon's Kindle and other smaller tablets like Google's Nexus 7.

The new MacBook Pro is 1.9cm thin and weighs 1.62kg, about 20% thinner and nearly 500g lighter than the current 13-inch (33cm) MacBook Pro.

Also released yesterday was the new iPad mini, a new iPad design that is again much thinner and lighter than the third-generation iPad. The fourth-generation iPad, also released yesterday, and the mini both come with iOS 6.

The last product released by the company was the new iMac, the new design having a display with reduced reflection and faster processors.

No release date was announced for the new MacBook, but it ranges in price from $2699 for 8GB of memory and 128GB of flash storage to $3199 with 256GB of storage.

The iPad mini and the new iPad will both be available in New Zealand from November 2. The mini will retail from between $479 and $799, depending on storage, and the iPad will retail for between $729 and $1029.

The new iMac will be available next month through Apple online and will retail from between $1999 and $3199, depending on size and storage.

The iPad mini marks the iPhone-maker's first foray into the smaller tablet segment of the market.

Apple hopes to see off incursions into its home market of consumer electronics hardware while safeguarding its lead in the larger tablet market - one that even rivals like Samsung Electronics have found it hard to penetrate.
