The 18-year-old Dunedin rider is competing in the expert grade of the three-day New Zealand Motorcycle Trials Championships near Alexandra, which begins today .
The event has attracted a field of 52 competitors in five grades, including defending champion Jake Whitaker, of Wellington, who has collected the premier title for five successive years.
Central Otago's rocky outcrops are an ideal location for the sport, which involves riders wending their way slowly over obstacles, without falling or placing their feet on the ground.
They lose points each time their feet touch the ground.
Fox's interest was sparked after watching the national championships being staged in Alexandra eight years ago and he enjoys competing on that same terrain now.
"Those rocks are awesome. Usually it's dry, so there's good grip. I like the shape of them and the shingle - it's a real test against Mother Nature, being able to balance on them."
Described by those involved in the sport as an "up and coming" rider, Fox has headed to Australia three times this year to compete in the world championships, the New South Wales companionships and the Australian championships, where he won the youth grade.
The Taieri College year 13 pupil is hoping to make a career out of it, and compete in the world series in Europe.
"I like that's it's very technical ... it's basically you and the bike, so it's all up to you and controlled by nobody else."
His aim at the nationals this weekend is for a top-five finish.
"It would be hard to win with Jake Whitaker competing, but I'd be pretty happy if I came second to him."
Riders complete the 10-section course four times each day and spectators are welcome, with best viewing between 10am and 3pm. The action will take place on two Earnscleugh properties, near Alexandra, today, tomorrow and Monday.
