Alcohol cited in fatal crash

Alcohol was a factor in a single-car crash which killed a man who was not wearing a seatbelt in Nelson yesterday evening, police say.

The Mercedes crashed into a bank about 5.55pm beside state highway 6 between Havelock and Canvastown, police said.

A 58-year-old local man, who was believed to not be wearing a seatbelt, died.

A 60-year-old man was airlifted to Nelson hospital with serious injuries.

The driver, a 43-year-old local woman, was not hurt.

Inquiries into the cause of the crash were continuing. Police said alcohol was a factor.
