A team from Wakatipu High School came out on top in last night's year 9-10 Otago Daily Times Extra! social studies quiz in Cromwell.

The Wakatipu I team of Ben Dolman (15), Ali Macarg (14) and Caleb Dawson-Swale (15) emerged the winner after answering 84 questions correctly from a total of 100.

Second place went to Dunstan 6 (Alexandra) with 88 correct answers and Dunstan 7 was third with 84.

Once again the standard of knowledge at this year's quiz was high with some teams answering every question correctly after three of the 10 rounds.

Thirty-three teams of three from around Central Otago and the Lakes District competed last night in the Cromwell College auditorium.

The pupils were required to decipher cartoon messages, name flags of the world and identify current events both nationally and internationally.

Extra! editor Ivan Behrnes said the quiz was designed to foster the interest of young people in current events and encourage them to read the newspaper to keep up with what was happening in the world around them.

He compiles questions throughout the year as each major new event appears in the news.

The Otago Daily Times Extra! social studies quizzes are part of the newspaper's Class Act project, which celebrates the excellence of young people.

Extra! is a monthly educational publication produced by the newspaper for senior primary, intermediate and junior secondary school pupils.
