The building in Dunedin, on the corner of Crawford and Jervois Sts, owned by the Salvation Army, is being demolished at 8.30am today.

Salvation Army corps officer Captain David McEwen said it did not meet safety requirements and would cost "a huge amount" to bring up to standard.

The lot would be converted into a car park.

The building had had a variety of uses in the past, such as a furniture store.

Demolishing it would change the look of the block, but it had to come down, he said. ‘‘Otherwise it would come down by itself, in due time.’’
