Residents joining forces to scoop poop

West Harbour walkway users are taking the problem of excessive amounts of dog faeces into their own hands with a community poop scooping event planned for this weekend.

St Leonards resident Antonia Wood said she had formed the community group Poos Off Our Paths on Facebook, and it was hosting a Scoop the Poop event this Sunday.

Miss Wood had highlighted the problem of droppings on the West Harbour walkway by spraying offending pieces with a water soluble paint at the end of June, marking 217 pieces in a 500m stretch.

Now, the spray can was set to make a comeback, this time to help volunteers with the cleanup effort.

"[We will] pre-spray the poos and then divide up sections so that people can ... hopefully clean up the whole walkway."

Miss Wood had taken the initiative to pick up some droppings herself on a walk last week and removed 105 pieces in 150m, stopping because the bag got too heavy.

Dunedin city councillor Steve Walker said he had been working with the group to determine what the council could do to support its activities.

It had already put up new signs at four different entrance points to the track advising dog walkers of the need to keep their pets on a leash and to pick up any faeces produced.

"[The council has] also allocated ... one of the dog team to actually come along on Sunday as well.’’

The event starts at the Ravensbourne walkway car park at 11am on Sunday.

Gloves and compostable bags will be provided to volunteers.
