The New Zealand junior rugby tournament will return to Queenstown for its second year next weekend when 20 under-13 sides descend on the resort.

Children from throughout the country will play in the two-day tournament at the Queenstown Events Centre.

The tournament, which originated in Taupo, will this year comprise more than 40 teams, including from Australia and South Africa.

Organiser Tyrone Campbell said the two tourist towns were perfect venues for the age-group tournament.

Queenstown had the same ability as Taupo to build up the size of the tournament. He wanted to see the Queenstown tournament become a similar size to the one in Taupo.

"Queenstown and Taupo are the mecca of tourism and Queenstown is beautiful," Mr Campbell said.

"It's not just about the rugby, it's about the kids travelling away with their mates and having a fun time," he said.

"It's about enjoyment, first and foremost."
