Vandalism has led the decision to install cameras at the Oamaru Public Gardens within the next month, and further options being sought in other locations.

The Waitaki District Council allocated $15,000 for the cameras last year, to prevent further graffiti and vandalism at the gardens.

Council recreation manager Erik van der Spek said that while the issues were minor compared with what other districts faced, they were still disruptive.

"It still costs ratepayers.

"Any vandalism is pointless, frustrating and reduces the amount of funding available for other work."

The Oamaru skate park was also targeted with nine incidents since May 2019 of unsuitable behaviour including graffiti, broken glass and rubbish issues on the old Aquatic Centre walls.

Contractors have removed graffiti twice since last month.

An assets committee report states police recommended removing walls two years ago, and Mr van der Spek said the council obtained costs for the work; a decision would be made soon whether to progress.

Earlier in the year, the Oamaru Harbour toilets were damaged in an alleged arson and the hand basin, hand dryer and toilet roll dispensers were ripped from the walls.

The report stated the toilets’ roof would be painted to address smoke damage, and Mr van der Spek confirmed that work had been completed.
