Supermarket attack: man denies attempted murder charges

The man allegedly responsible for a stabbing frenzy at a Dunedin supermarket has denied charges of attempted murder.

The 42-year-old appeared in the High Court at Dunedin yesterday on four counts after allegedly attacking two supermarket staff members and a married couple at the Cumberland St Countdown on May 10.

His counsel, John Westgate, elected trial by jury.

The victims were all discharged from hospital last month and three have since expressed their gratitude to those who saved their lives.

The defendant attended yesterday’s hearing by video link from prison and remained silent throughout.

Name suppression was continued by Justice Robert Osborne until a hearing in late August, when the issue will be fully argued.

At a previous hearing, the court heard a psychological report had been sought by the defence and now an independent assessment was in train.

Justice Osborne remanded the defendant in custody to appear in court again on August 3.

Security staff have been stationed inside the supermarket since the incident.
