The Roxburgh Community Board yesterday agreed to hand over the running of the town pool and lease the surrounding land to a local committee for just $1 a year.
The Roxburgh Pool Management Committee, in conjunction with the Roxburgh Area School, had run the pool on a trial basis last summer with success and wanted to do so again, as well as upgrade it. Community board member John Lane told school principal and committee representative Gary Pasco that over the years, the board had commissioned numerous feasibility studies for the pool. He said those studies included some scary costs, but he hoped they could be used instead of spending money on new ones.
Mr Pasco said the committee had yet to look at those studies but they were not yet able to consider any renovations or upgrades.
The board agreed to grant the committee almost $38,000 over three years as well as cover pool rates, electricity and telephone bills.
The pool is on land owned by the Central Otago District Council. The land will be leased to the committee for $1 a year and the assets, the pool, plant and changing rooms, will be given to the school.
