Show explains Alpine Fault

Southlanders were able to learn more about the South’s largest natural hazard on Monday at the Alpine Fault Roadshow.

The project is a collaboration between the science community and South Island civil defence groups to enable preparedness for an Alpine Fault earthquake.

It is is led by Emergency Management Southland.

About 100 people attended the event in Invercargill and were told about recent research which estimated a 75% probability of the next large earthquake happening in the next 50 years, as well as how it might impact them.

AF8 Science-lead Associate Prof Caroline Orchiston

explained the fault was discovered , about 80 years ago, when geological surveyor Harold Wellman observed identical red hills in Southland and Northwest Nelson.

"This fault had moved over a long period of time and had moved these two red hills apart across the fault zone."
