Niece charged in Nelson hit and run

A woman will appear in court this afternoon accused of running her car into her uncle, pinning him against a fence and reportedly severing his leg.

The 26-year-old woman allegedly veered across Wakefield Quay in Nelson to hit her uncle on a pavement across the road, pinning him against a fence about 7.40am, then fled before police arrived.

She turned herself in at the police station at 10am, Detective Senior Sergeant Wayne McCoy said.

She was to appear in court this afternoon charged with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Her uncle suffered serious injuries and was to have surgery this afternoon. His leg was reportedly severed in the crash.

Mr McCoy said police were yet to speak to the 40-year-old victim and were still speakign to witnesses.
