Plans for market in Seddon Square

Waimate will get its own farmers' market, with plans to start the venture on November 2.

The weekly market on a Sunday has been organised by Pro-Ject Waimate, which has been working with local growers to establish it.

Pro-Ject Waimate has now applied to the Waimate District Council to use Seddon Square for the market, working around popular events such as the busking festival.

The council will consider that request at its meeting on Tuesday.

Pro-Ject Waimate co-ordinator Sheryl Frew said the market would run from 9am to 1pm each Sunday.

Priority would be given to vendors from within the Waimate district.

The market would not be open to crafts.

Produce had to be grown or made by the seller, had to be freshly harvested or made and stall-holders would pay a weekly fee of $20. Anything made must have a principal ingredient produced or grown locally.

All food products would be acceptable, including plants that can be eaten, plus flowers, drink and products which enhanced sustainable food production and waste reduction.

Products containing genetically modified organisms would be banned.

Food safety and hygiene standards would have to be met.
