The Dunedin Railway Station clock will receive a helping hand after repeatedly getting out of time.

The clock is currently running about 10 minutes fast, but the Dunedin City Council hopes an upgrade will make that issue a thing of the past.

Council property services group manager David Bainbridge-Zafar said the clock’s back-up battery would soon be replaced, costing less than $2000, so it did not lose time in future power outages.

The clock was built in 1906 and was upgraded to use electricity in the 1950s.

It had been manually set twice this year after power cuts affected the accuracy.

The clock was checked regularly by an electrician and the clock mechanism was maintained by a specialist as required, Mr Bainbridge-Zafar said.

The council also planned to replace one of the station’s platform clocks during its next scheduled maintenance, which would cost about $1500.
