New digs for men’s group

Members of an Invercargill group offering men a place to talk and relax are making a move to a new, bigger, premises.

Having received grants from various Southland groups and agencies, the Invercargill MenzShed first got the keys to its new Liddel St building at the beginning of April.

Operations manager Peter Bailey said they hoped to be operational by the middle of this month.

"We’ve got a fairly tough and tight guideline but we’re working towards it."

He said there were about 30 members and their focus had predominantly been on woodwork, but with the new premises numbers were expected to increase and engineering equipment would be brought in.

Members’ projects included community-minded initiatives such as easels for the local gallery and picnic tables for ILT Stadium Southland.

The new building offered a place for men to socialise with one another, and the club had proved more popular than they had anticipated when it formed in 2017, Mr Bailey said.

When asked what it offered members, Mr Bailey said it was a place for relieving stress.

"There’s a bit of camaraderie; [it is] somewhere we can talk about men’s health problems ... the guys just seem to get along."
