Cumming certainly has credentials

Otago is looking for a new coach and the recruiting process will flush out all sorts and probably plenty of South Africans. But perhaps the Volts do not have to look much further than the backyard. Cricket writer Adrian Seconi reports.

Craig Cumming

He is the obvious choice.

The right-hander played at the highest level.

He coached the Otago Sparks this season.

He has a sound understanding of the high performance environment and has the appropriate coaching certificates.

But does he want the job?

Cumming could not be reached for comment yesterday so it is hard to gauge his level of interest.

There are a couple of complicating factors. He has a good job as the director of sport at Otago Boys’ High School and his son, Jacob, is not too far off making the team.

It can be difficult to be objective if a family member is involved so that is likely to be a consideration for Cumming if he does decide to apply.

His curriculum vitae would include being Otago’s leading scorer and a long-serving captain.

Bradley Scott

He has had two years at the helm of the Otago under-19 team. The former Volts and Northern Districts left-armer is a good communicator and is in possession of fine cricket brain.

But the timing is not right. He is a teacher has King’s High School and father of four.

‘‘I’m probably too inexperienced for a head coaching role but maybe in a support role,’’ he said.

‘‘I want to see Otago do well and if I can help with that then that’s great. But it does not have to necessarily be in a coaching role.’’

Brett Harrop

He is the Volts physiotherapist and probably at best a wildcard.

He is in Australia on holiday and could not be reached for comment.

Harrop’s main contribution to the Volts since joining the association in 2016 has been to help keep the players on the field.

But he has been more involved than that. When he is not giving rub downs he can be spotted helping with fielding and bowling drills. A former fast bowler, his cricket career was stymied by injury, but he did play one first-class game and one list A game for Victoria, though.

Warren McSkimming

He has been involved as a selector for the past few years and has done the odd bit bowling coaching with the Volts. The right-armer enjoyed a long and fruitful first-class career for the association.

Craig Johnston as a rank outsider, has the potential go suprise at a time when nothing else has worked since. . . . 1988?

Emma Campbell. Past Spark and White Fern, but most importantly a phenomenal coach
