The family at the centre of a leaky home settlement with the Dunedin City Council say they are thankful their fight is finally over.
It was confirmed on Thursday the owners of 36 Leithton Close, Glenleith - Deborah Wai Kapohe and Michael Beazley - had reached a settlement with the council after nearly 18 months fighting for "a way out".
Details of the deal remain confidential, but the settlement had brought "closure" to the family, the couple said in an email to the Otago Daily Times yesterday.
"One of the most valuable aspects to our family of mediating in confidence is that the emotional stress and anxiety are brought to an end ... rather than take [legal] positions.
"We received amazing support from Dunedin people and would love to say thank you."
The couple, now understood to be living in the North Island, also said it had been "important to us" that Dunedin people were alerted to the existence of leaky homes in Dunedin.
The ODT emailed the couple further questions about the settlement, but no response was received.
The couple bought the $550,000 home at 36 Leithton Close in late 2010, after checking it had a code of compliance certificate from the council certifying it met Building Code requirements.
They soon began discovering flaws inside their home and the house was declared a leaky home in April last year.
They sought a settlement from the council for signing off on the home despite the flaws discovered after they moved in.
Council chief building control officer Neil McLeod on Thursday confirmed a settlement had been reached at mediation talks in Dunedin last week, but a confidentiality agreement prevented discussion of the deal by the parties.
