Dog owners have been given the word - it could be costly if you bring your pooch into Oamaru's central business area.

Since the Waitaki District Council introduced a bylaw in 2004, dogs have been banned from certain parts of town and, in others, must be on leads at all times Signs were put up, including at the approaches to the central business district.

However, the signs on poles are not easily visible and cost more than $500 each, so the council has now also painted warnings on footpaths, including notice of a fine of $300.

The painted warnings cost $350 for a stencil and the paint.

Regulatory services manager Steven May said the best and cheapest form of compliance was voluntary, where dog owners understood the law and the consequences.

The council had trialled warnings painted on footpaths using a stencil in the central business area and historic area.

The central business area had more than 50 footpaths and alleyways where a person walking a dog could enter the prohibited area.

Signs on poles were more prone to vandalism than stencils painted on footpaths, Mr May said.
