The fire, to which authorities were called late yesterday afternoon, has burnt about 600ha, mostly tussock, about 10km to 20km east of Hyde.
This afternoon, Dunedin City Council rural fires manager Neil Brown said authorities were ''comfortable'' with the blaze.
It had spread into Blakely Pacific's forest block; however, it was very lucky the fire did not take hold there, only burning about 10ha, he said.
Blakely Pacific staff were assisting Dunedin, Waitaki rural fire, and the Department of Conservation to manage the situation.
Waitaki was assisting because the fire crossed district boundaries.
Terrain was difficult, and firefighters would halt their work about dusk this evening, Mr Brown said.
They would be back first light tomorrow.
It had been lucky winds forecast for today did not eventuate.
