A 133-year-old Waianakarua landmark, which has been run in recent years as a restaurant and motel, will go up for mortgagee auction at the end of the month.

The Mill House, which was built in 1879 as a flour mill, will go under the hammer at an auction at the Oamaru Opera House on July 27, and Ray White estate agent Maree Thorpe said the 13-bedroom property had attracted a lot of interest from prospective buyers. There had also been considerable interest from outside the district.

The property has a rateable value of $600,000. It had ceased operations as a commercial business within the last 12 months, Mrs Thorpe said.

The historic building is due to be sold as a "going concern".

Mrs Thorpe said a reserve price, set by the bank, would be implemented on the day of the auction.
